Founded in May 1946 by ex MG Racing mechanic Harry Camp and
trading from one section of an out building at the abattoir in
Providence, was the humble beginnings of a motor trade dynasty.
Having moved back to wife Eleanors home town with their three children after a career taking them all over the country, it was decided the time was right to start “H Camp & Son” as son Dennis would soon be returning from his National Service. It didn’t take very long before the partnership was able to take over the entire site in Providence and Providence Garage was born. Sadly
Harry died in 1973 but Dennis carried on in his quiet unassuming style
continuing to cater for his well established and cared for customers.
Having never married it was left to his sister (and secretary) Doreen
to supply the next generation of mechanics. In 1974 nephew Duncan
Brasted joined the firm but only stayed for one year as he moved on to
take up a full apprenticeship in the Ford Motor Company network.
It was
in 1979 when Duncan’s brother Scott Braisted came onto the scene.
Things stayed much the same until 1988 when Duncan returned, having
completed 14 years learning the manufacturers perspective things slowly
began to evolve.
Duncan
divided his time between Providence Garage and contract work all over
Europe for Ford, Dennis semi retired in 1994 and sadly died a year
later, the two brothers, basing their ethos on Harry and Dennis’s
caring obliging ways took the company forward.
In 2000 they opened
Protech MOT & Service Centre in Springfield Road, in 2003, an
offer was made to develop the Providence site to the benefit of the
whole family and enabled Scott & Duncan to make major improvements
to Protech, move everything to Springfield road and create Providence Garage (H Camp &
Son 1946) Ltd's final incarnation PROVIDENCEPROTECH.
